Introduction

Since ancient times, turmeric is famous in India and across the world, mainly for its culinary and medicinal benefits, especially in Ayurveda. Various qualities of this spice have been used as a food ingredient and other natural dyes, a clinical ingredient in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors, and other uses.

In India, turmeric occupies about 6% of the total area under spices and condiments. The export of turmeric from India benefits India greatly as India is one of the most important producers and a major global turmeric exporter. It also helps the nation to grow economically and better serve the world. Moreover, the remarkable diversity of this spice in terms of varieties (about 40 to 45) is a significant advantage in bringing innovations and derivatives to market.

Market Trends of Turmeric Export From India

India represents 80% of the global production of turmeric and acts as a major turmeric exporter. Turmeric production in 2018-19 was 389 thousand tonnes, with a 246 thousand hectare area and 5646.34 kg per hectare area and productivity.

In 2020, India earned 201,152 Thousand US Dollars as a net profit from the export of turmeric from India in the foreign market. In the past year, the United States was the top among the turmeric importing countries from India, with 22% of total export value, followed by Bangladesh (18%), Iran (6%), and the United Arab Emirates (5%). Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Germany, and Japan are among the other countries that leverage turmeric export from India.

Turmeric is also a regular ingredient in everyday groceries, such as turmeric jaggery. The sale has also increased in the international market, while the value of turmeric exports from India has increased by 20% in the last year, compared to a 6% growth in 2016-20.

North-eastern states have a chance to be successful by cultivating and marketing their natural resources. Because of their higher production, northeastern states, particularly Mizoram and Sikkim, are considered unusually high productivity states in turmeric farming. They also have the benefit of being recognized for organic production. It won’t be surprising to see Mizoram and Sikkim playing a leading role when it comes to turmeric export from India.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare launched the Central Sector Scheme, Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North East Region (MOCVD-NER), as part of the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), to support the development of the value chain from input supply to certification to the creation of facilities for aggregation and processing of the product.

In Manipur, MOCVD-NER manages 33 clusters; Assam and Sikkim have superior geographic coverage of FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations). They can quickly exploit this market niche by encouraging identical methods in other north eastern states.

Turmeric has been one of the fastest-growing nutritional supplements since the pandemic. The global turmeric market, worth $58.4 million in 2019, is expected to grow by 12.7% by 2027. India continues to profit from this as the world’s largest turmeric exports from India.

According to the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s turmeric export data, India produces 78% of the world’s turmeric. Since Independence, the country’s turmeric production had grown steadily until 2010-11, when it fluctuated.

The pandemic has boosted the crop, with production increasing by 23% in the first year of the pandemic, from 957,130 tonnes in 2018-19 to 1,178,750 tonnes in 2019-20.

Turmeric-growing land increased by 12.5% between 2018-19 and 2020-21, from 261,922 hectares (ha) to 294,542 ha. India exported 1,36,000 tonnes (almost 12%) of the turmeric produced in 2019-20, worth Rs 1,216.4 crore.

The area under production expanded from 261,922 ha in 2018-19 to 296,181 ha in 2019-20 during the first year of the pandemic. However, by 2020-21, it had dropped to 294,542 ha.
